Concept
Psychological Ownership (Employee Autonomy)
motivation management autonomy
Giving an employee genuine budget authority and creative control over a specific area — rather than only managerial oversight — measurably increases both the quality of that area's execution and the employee's own motivation to see the wider organization succeed. Will Guidara illustrates this with Eleven Madison Park's beverage "ownership program": handing full control of the beer, cocktail, and tea programs to junior staff who were personally passionate about them (rather than to an already-stretched wine director) produced independently-recognized "best in America" results within a year (see EMP Ownership Program Beer Case). Guidara's broader claim: anyone given even a small, genuine hand in shaping "what a thing is" works harder for its success than someone merely executing someone else's plan. Related to, but distinct from, the Hackman Oldham Job Characteristics Model's formal job-design theory — this is a single practitioner's applied case rather than an academic framework.
