Kipp Bodnar

CMO, HubSpot; co-host, Marketing Against the Grain

Guest in Episode 147. Chief Marketing Officer at HubSpot, where he helped grow the company from $10 million to $1.7 billion in annual revenue, and co-host of the podcast Marketing Against the Grain. Shares seven practical lessons from that growth:

Look for 10x value. HubSpot's early growth came from projects offering roughly ten times the value competitors charged for — giving away free stock photography to small businesses who'd otherwise pay for it was one example (see HubSpot Free Stock-Photography 10x-Value Case).

Different beats better. Citing Christopher Lockhead's line "different is a choice, better is a debate," Bodnar argues a "better mousetrap" positioning invites an endless comparison debate, while a genuinely different, transformational positioning — HubSpot's "inbound marketing" versus outbound — doesn't (see HubSpot Inbound-Marketing Positioning Case). It took five to seven years to pay off, but became foundational to HubSpot reaching $100 million.

Stay consistent. Sticking with one message for years, even through periods with no visible payoff, outperforms frequently changing strategy — citing research that multiple messages from one brand are forgotten faster than one consistent message, however creative.

Price on value, not volume. HubSpot's early growth accelerated once it added usage-based pricing (charging by number of contacts) alongside its flat tiers, a model that scales revenue with customer usage rather than losing ground to churn alone (see HubSpot Contact-Based Pricing Case).

Don't create without a distribution plan. HubSpot doesn't greenlight content — a blog post, video, or campaign — until the specific distribution channel is identified, citing Steve Rayson's parallel practice of splitting time evenly between creating and distributing content at Buzzsumo.

Hire for demonstrated ability, not conformity or credentials. Bodnar looks for candidates who have grown something measurable before, in any domain, rather than candidates who match his team's existing profile or come from a similar company.

Marketing is a meritocracy — build a public track record. His advice to someone starting out: obsess over building a public audience (he specifically recommends YouTube) rather than waiting to be credentialed, since demonstrated, visible ability is the only real qualification the field recognizes.
