Jose Mourinho

Subject of analysis (not a guest); football manager

Portuguese football manager, FIFA Coach of the Year, and one of only two FIFA World Coach of the Year winners never to have played at a top-five European league level (with Thomas Tuchel). Won the Champions League with both Porto and Inter Milan, Chelsea's first league title in 50 years, a then-record-breaking Spanish league campaign, and Roma's first trophy in 11 years. This episode is not a guest interview but Phill Agnew's own analysis of Mourinho's public communication, identifying three recurring persuasion tactics: signaling (declaring himself "the special one," naming a title-winning date before a ball was kicked, giving away his own team sheet before facing Barcelona), reactance (goading his own players by calling them "too nice to win," claiming media campaigns against his players to build siege mentality), and reframing (turning "we must win" into the lower-pressure "we cannot lose"). Agnew notes these same tactics arguably lost potency across Mourinho's career as they became predictable, and that using them on an opponent (taunting Thierry Henry for only scoring "against small clubs") can backfire by provoking reactance in the opponent instead.
